The Morning Post of Saturday September 25 1852 reports on a meeting held in Georgetown Guiana calling for “the lifting of all unnecessary restrictions on the import of free labour into the British colonies from all parts of the world” given that cheap sugar from the slave-owning colonies of SpainĀ and Portugal has “rendered this noble colony incapable of competing with any reasonable prospect of success…” following Emancipation in 1838.

And Mr Kelly’s Happy Joe won the Selling Stakes at Manchester on Thursday
